The Many Faces of the Second ‘Russian’ Generation in Germany

21/05/2025

What does belonging mean for young people with family roots in Russia who grew up in Germany? What political and social views do they hold?

In th new ZOiS Spotlight 10/2025, Félix Krawatzek and Sophia Winkler analyse the perspectives of 20 young adults between the ages of 18 and 35. The results reveal a wide range of attitudes – from progressive to conservative, from clear positions to ambivalent attitudes towards Russia and Germany.

The study sheds light on how identity is negotiated in the tension between family heritage, German socialisation and current political developments.
