'Land of Snow and Ashes' by Petra Rautiainen Insel Verlag

Event in English

In her novel 'Land of Snow and Ashes', Petra Rautiainen revisits a forgotten theatre of the Second World War – Finland. Against the backdrop of the Soviet invasion of its territory in 1939/40 – the short-lived Winter War – Finland fought alongside Nazi Germany in the German war of annihilation against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944. Rautiainen's literary account of the suffering of the inmates of Nazi concentration camps in Finland raises questions about the repression of Finland's own history and possible Finnish complicity.

The event is supported by the Finnland-Institut.
