Charlotte Bull and Claudia Eggart from the FU Berlin will showcase their project "Talking Walls". The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with the Georgian journalist Edita Badasyan and Armenian expert Nadja Douglas (ZOiS) on the socio-political background of public art in the two countries.

One group of people severely affected by the war in the Donbas region remains hidden from view: the displaced. Ukraine is now among the ten countries with the largest IDP populations worldwide. Irina Kuznetsova, Viktoriya Sereda and Hanna Vakhitova discuss the situation of the displaced.

Author Marianne Zückler, together with the editor of her book Carsten Schmidt, reads excerpts from "Osteuropaexpress: Erzählungen über Freiheit, Liebe, Sexualität und Ausgrenzung". The reading will be followed by a panel discussion with the political scientist Richard Mole (University College London).

Curator Kristiane Janeke presents the concept of the exhibition "1917. Revolution - Russia and Europe" at the German Historical Museum. Further insights into the topic will be given by Andrei Zavadski (Free University of Berlin) and Jan C. Behrends (Centre for Contemporary Research Potsdam).

ZOiS research fellow Nadja Douglas will present the central themes of her work and discuss them with invited experts. The panel includes Timm Beichelt of the Viadrina European University, Wilfried von Bredow, and Eric Sangar of the University of Namur.

Prof. Grzegorz Ekiert (University of Harvard) analyses the current situation in East Central Europe, focusing on the critical problems of post-communist transformations and the role of divisions within political elites. The talk will be followed by a discussion.

The relationship between Russia and France has recently been marked by tensions. Political scientist Dr. David Cadier assesses the two leaders’ meeting in Paris on 29 May and considers how relations between Russia and France may develop in future.

The colloquium is to serve as a discussion forum for work in progress by PhD students, postdocs, and established researchers whose work in the social sciences focuses on Eastern Europe. With this colloquium, the aim is to establish a permanent meeting point in the Berlin-Brandenburg area for those engaged in research on Eastern Europe.

In the panel discussion Ukrainian experts Anastasiya Leukhina and Valerii Pekar, together with Carnegie’s Balázs Jarábikt, focus on the question why the progress of the reforms in Ukraine is slower than expected.
