Protest for the environment, democracy and social justice, in Flensburg, Germany on 14 February 2025. IMAGO / Willi Schewski

How are political beliefs, historical narratives, and attachments to homeland transmitted across generations when the usual frameworks of continuity—such as shared political systems or national histories—are disrupted? In this event, we address situations in which migration, regime change, and shifting societal contexts complicate the role of the family as a primary site of political socialisation.

The first part of the event draws on findings from recent research into individuals with a Russian background in Germany. These insights provide the basis for a broader discussion on intergenerational transmission among migrant families, with particular attention to Turkish communities in Germany. The debate will explore how political attitudes and collective memory are shaped when parents and children navigate divergent social and political landscapes.

In the second part, the audience will have the opportunity to explore the different methodological foundations of the research—surveys, focus groups, and social media analysis—in more detail through a poster walk.

This event marks the opening of a conference taking place in the following days and is organised as part of the ERC-funded project "Moving Russia(ns): Intergenerational Transmission of Memories Abroad and at Home."
