Workshop

Ethnicity, Indigeneity, and Identity in Soviet and Post-Soviet Contexts

13/02/2026

On February 13, 2026, Hakob Matveosyan will participate in a workshop on “Ethnicity, Indigeneity, and Identity in Soviet and Post-Soviet Contexts.” The workshop is organized by the East European Studies Group (University of Amsterdam) and ETHNICGOODS (a project of the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals, IBEI, funded by the ERC).

The workshop will examine how the Soviet Union shaped and institutionalized ethnic and national identities, which were, however, always contested and subject to change. In the post-Soviet states, these identities are now being renegotiated under changed political and social conditions.

Hakob will speak on the topic “Who's Welcome? Security, Soviet Memories, and the Estonian Refugee Dilemma.”
