Event Summary
On 6 May 2025, the Caucasus Network held a discussion event on the topic of “Armenia on the way to Europe.” The event focused on three key aspects. Richard Girogasian provided an explanation of the geopolitical context, contextualising Armenia's turn towards the West in terms of the general diversification strategy of Armenian foreign policy, as well as the crisis in Russian-Armenian relations since 2020.
Yevgenya 'Jenny' Paturyan and Neva Karapetyan analysed the domestic political situation in Armenia. They primarily used data from the Caucasus Barometer to illustrate changes in foreign policy perceptions since 2020.
Finally, Franziska Smolnik discussed relations between Armenia and the EU. She believes that the EU must act more credibly, as it has much to offer but often communicates its goals and offers poorly.
In the subsequent discussion, a variety of topics of interest to participants were addressed, leading to stimulating contributions and discussions. Questions focused on Russian disinformation and potential interference in the 2026 Armenian elections, the normalisation of relations between Turkey and Armenia, and the potential impact of Georgia's autocratization on Armenia's European aspirations. Other topics included the role and issues surrounding 'caviar diplomacy' and the corruption scandal favouring Azerbaijan in the EU Parliament and its impact on the EU's rapprochement with Armenia.
