This year, ZOiS celebrates its 5th anniversary. With an event at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities on 5 September, we want to recall our first steps as a research institute, reflect on the importance of Eastern Europe for science, politics and public discourse, and try to take a look ahead.

Call for Papers
Connectivity and Disconnectivity in the South Caucasus
|
|
|
|
|
‘Connectivity’ has become a buzzword with regard to the South Caucasus. While it seems to be on everyone’s lips, the processes associated with it are actually characterised by a variety of disconnections due to external and internal factors. Against this backdrop, this workshop aims for a thorough engagement with and theorisation of connectivity.

Summer School
Viadrinicum 2022 at ZOiS

|
As part of the summer school programme, participants spent a day at the institute. After an introduction from the institute's management, researchers and communications team, there were three parallel sessions. The participants learned about research methods, different ways to tackle their first research project, and discussed the role of media in war with Ukrainian Journalist Fellow Olga Konsevych. The event concluded with a public panel discussion about ‘The (Transnational) Role of Universities in Times of War’.

New International Research Network
ZOiS and DeZIM Set up Network to Study Experiences of Displaced Ukrainians
|
|
|
|
|
ZOiS and the German Centre for Integration and Migration Studies (DeZIM e.V.) are initiating the research network "Forced Migrants From Ukraine in Transnational Europe: Between Personal Agency, Civil Society And The State" (FORUM). It brings together an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers.

The Effect of War on Ukraine's Values

The war in Ukraine is also a war between two value systems. While in Russia's narrative Western values pose a threat, Ukraine is increasingly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community and has ratified the Istanbul Convention. However, this is also leading to tensions with conservative, religious forces in the country.

Georgia's New Wave of Russian Migrants

Russia's war in Ukraine and the repressive policies in their own country are prompting more and more young, educated Russians to leave their home country. In Georgia, many of them are involved in self-organised social and political projects. Georgian society is, however, wary of these newcomers.

In June, Ukraine passed a law banning the sale of books from Russia and Belarus. The focus on literature may be surprising in view of the war, but the country is taking a significant step away from Russia's colonial heritage towards its own Western-oriented culture.
