Postdoctoral researcher (m/f/div)

ideally starting on 1 February 2022. The full-time position is initially for 12 months. There is a possibility that the contract may be extended. The salary is based on the E13 salary scale of the collective agreement for the civil service (TVöD).

The Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) is an independent, international, publicly funded research institute. It focuses on foundational and socially relevant academic research on Eastern Europe and shares the results with policy-makers, the media and the broader public.

The Postdoctoral researcher will be conducting academic research on topics connected to the research cluster, especially the ongoing project 'China, the EU and Economic Development in Eastern Europe and Eurasia' funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Based on case studies of Chinese investments in infrastructure projects, this project investigates under what conditions China challenges the EU as a global market and regulatory power in countries covered by the Belt and Road Initiative. Additional research interests related to Russia’s engagement in Eastern Europe and Eurasia are also welcome. Research tasks include data collection and analysis, project management, writing research reports, and co-authoring of project-based publications.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in political science or other social science disciplines matching the position’s research profile
  • Experience in research on China’s engagement in Eastern Europe and/or Eurasia (ideally with a focus on the Southern Caucasus and/or Central Asia)
  • Additional knowledge and experience in research on Russia’s engagement in Eastern Europe or Eurasia, in particular with a view to processes of authoritarian retrenchment and/or democratization in the region is an asset
  • Strong skills in qualitative research methods; additional skills in quantitative research methods are an asset
  • Research or work experience in Eastern Europe or Eurasia is an asset
  • Publication(s) in international journals with peer-review is an asset
  • Good communication skills, incl. excellent written and spoken English skills (German is not a prerequisite); additional proficiency in Russian or another language spoken in the research region is an asset
  • Interest in working in a team and in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • Willingness and aptness to travel abroad
